Okay, so I have found a new fun hobby, Geocaching (pronounced “geo-cashing”). The concept of geocaching is that you first sign on to Geocaching.com and get a free account. Then search for caches near you by either entering your longitude and latitude or your zip code. Then you take your GPS device (handheld GPS or app on your smartphone) and go find the cache! They vary in size; some are the size of an ammo box (actually they usually are old ammo boxes), to a super small one the size of a pencil eraser. The first that I found was one of these super small size, I found it with a couple of good friends while we were at a church cookout in a local park. I signed up for an account a year ago but never did anything with it, mostly because I didn’t understand it. Then when I actually found something I caught the bug, I was hooked. The next day I found the first one by myself near the local Starbucks. A few hours later I took one of my sons (Peyton) out and we found another. We went to Tennessee a couple of days later and found one, so I officially have them in 2 states. As I write I have only been doing this for about a week, I have 8. I have a goal of averaging 1 a day, maybe more. There is a woman in Bowling Green that has over 4,700. She is obviously doing several a day.
So part of the fun is finding, the other is hiding them. Some of the larger caches have prizes in them. But, you only get to take a prize if you place a prize of equal or greater value. There can be some really neat prizes in some of the larger boxes. I have found two caches that had something in them. One was a cool “Geocaching” button, the other was a Harley Davidson key. I am going to have to find some prizes that are really awesome and unique. Not a lot in my head right now. But, this is going to be a blast!
